Automatic Updates: Microsoft Windows and Office at the same time

July 18, 2006

It’s very important to make sure that all of your applications – specifically, Windows, Office, and all of your security applications – are completely up-to-date.  Here are a couple of tips for setting your system up so that the updates happen automagically:

Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office

Microsoft fairly recently began offering a service that can automatically update both Windows and your versions of Office at the same time.  To get set up:

    1. Open Internet Explorer (not Firefox, since this is a Microsoft site, and they “don’t take kindly to browser strangers of the enemy variety), and go to:
    2. On the Update page, you should see a splash announcement at the top:  “New!  Get Microsoft Update today!”  It’s not Windows update; it’s not Office update; it’s Microsoft update, which covers both Windows and Office and several other Microsoft applications.  In that dialog area click the Go icon
    3. Then, follow the bouncing prompts.  You will probably have to allow a new ActiveX plug-in for your browser to be installed during the process

Now and going forward, Automatic Update will look for updates to Windows and Office at the same time.
