It’s very important to make sure that all of your applications – specifically, Windows, Office, and all of your security applications – are completely up-to-date. Here are a couple of tips for setting your system up so that the updates happen automagically:
Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office
Microsoft fairly recently began offering a service that can automatically update both Windows and your versions of Office at the same time. To get set up:
- Open Internet Explorer (not Firefox, since this is a Microsoft site, and they “don’t take kindly to browser strangers of the enemy variety), and go to: http://www.windowsupdate.com
- On the Update page, you should see a splash announcement at the top: “New! Get Microsoft Update today!” It’s not Windows update; it’s not Office update; it’s Microsoft update, which covers both Windows and Office and several other Microsoft applications. In that dialog area click the Go icon
- Then, follow the bouncing prompts. You will probably have to allow a new ActiveX plug-in for your browser to be installed during the process
Now and going forward, Automatic Update will look for updates to Windows and Office at the same time.
